Local Councils Award Scheme 2

HALSTEAD TOWN COUNCIL RECEIVES AWARD IN NATIONAL SCHEME

Mayor Cllr Andy Munday and Town Clerk Sarah Greatorex picked up the award certificate at the cermomy held at Braintree District Council on Monday 25 March 2019

award ceremony med

Halstead Town Council has been awarded a prestigious award as part of the Local Council Award Scheme. This achievement recognises that the council achieves good practice in governance, community engagement and council improvement. Moreover, Halstead Town Council goes above and beyond their legal obligations, leading their communities and continuously seeking opportunities to improve and develop even further.

The Award Scheme report highlighted the council’s particular areas of strength, including its action plan and annual town report, and community engagement and grant giving policies.

The Local Council Award Scheme is a peer assessed programme that has been designed to both provide the tools and encouragement to those councils at the beginning of their improvement journeys, as well as promoting and recognising councils that are at the cutting edge of the sector. It is through the sector working together to share best practice, drive up standards and supporting those who are committed to improving their offer to their communities that individual councils and the sector as a whole will reach its full potential.

In terms of the future, the council is now preparing itself for the next level of the award scheme, the Quality award, and reviewing ways in which it can continue to improve its offer to the local community and welcomes input from local people and partners on this. Halstead Town Council and other local councils like it, are at the front line of the government’s localism agenda and are doing as much as they can to deliver services whilst being efficient and cost-effective. Currently the council provides a range of services from Community events such as the annual torchlight procession and lights switch-on to advice on planning and support of local organisations. and wants to improve its community engagement through this.

Halstead care home residents take birdwatch weekend to the ‘nest’ level

Halstead care home residents take birdwatch weekend to the ‘nest’ level

care home

Residents at a care home in Halstead celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Colne View, on Dame Mary Walk, celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

Inviting along pupils from St Andrew’s Primary School for the celebrations, both residents and children enjoyed a visit from Birds of Prey Rescue, giving them the opportunity to get close to some of Britain’s most magnificent creatures.  Everyone enjoyed the special ‘show and tell’ session, where they were able to learn more about our feathered friends.

Putting their baking skills to the test, residents and pupils also made their very own edible bird nest cakes, which were enjoyed while reflecting on the exciting day.

Razvan Stanbeca, home manager at Colne View, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Colne View, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event with help from pupils at St Andrew’s Primary School.

“Animal therapy can be extremely beneficial for older people – especially for those living with dementia. Being close to animals can help lift a person’s mood, stimulate social interaction and ease agitation. Connecting with nature can also encourage happy memories and the associated emotions.

“I’d like to say thank you to Kala Dowsett and John Dowsett, from Birds of Prey Rescue and the pupils from St Andrew’s Primary School for joining us and making the day so special. Everyone certainly had a fantastic time celebrating the best of British birds!”
